Nestled in the charming coastal town of Alnmouth, Northumberland, the 17th Century listed Schooner Hotel is said to be home to 60 ghosts.
An incredible 3000 ghost sightings have been reported since 1998, earning the Schooner Hotel’s reputation as one of Britain’s most haunted hotels.
History of the Schooner Hotel
Initially constructed in the 1600s, the listed Schooner Hotel became a pivotal institution in Alnmouth, a well-known seaport.
Schooners of all types sailed into the port, bringing in merchants, sailors, and travelers alike. The hotel’s prime location made it an ideal stop for these visitors, and its cellar became a convenient hideaway for smugglers.
Schooner Hotel Ghosts
The hotel’s history as a haven for smugglers has left an indelible mark on its spectral residents. The cellar, once connected to the sea by a tunnel, is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a smuggler, and mysterious lights have been seen in this area.
While paranormal activity has been reported in almost all of the hotel’s 32 rooms, rooms 28, 29, and 30 are believed to be the most active.
Room 28 is the most haunted room in the Schooner Hotel, and ghostly goings-on are common. It was the site of a horrific family massacre allegedly committed by a gang of smugglers. The room is known for the unsettling sounds of children crying in anguish.
One of the more menacing apparitions is a black figure emerging from room 22. Two female staff reported the mysterious figure appearing before crawling towards them on the landing, causing them to flee in terror.
The ghost of a maid and a ghostly soldier have also been reported, whilst visitors have reported glimpsing a young boy riding a tricycle on the landing area.
