Ye Olde Salutation Inn
Ye Olde Salutation Inn, located in Nottingham, England, dates back to 1240 AD, making it one of the oldest pubs in the city. The building was originally constructed as a tannery before being converted into an alehouse. Its name is believed to derive from the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
During the English Civil War in the 1640s, the inn served as a recruiting station for the Royalist army. The cellar was reportedly used to detain prisoners of war during this period. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the inn became a popular gathering place for local workers and travelers.
The Salutation Inn has a reputation for paranormal activity. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young girl named Rosie, who is said to have died in a fire at the inn during the Victorian era. Witnesses claim to have seen her ghost on the staircase and in the upper rooms.
Another notable spirit is believed to be that of a highwayman who was killed in the inn after being betrayed by his accomplices. Staff and patrons have reported hearing unexplained footsteps and seeing shadowy figures in the bar area.
The cellar, with its history as a holding area for prisoners, is said to be particularly active. Visitors have reported feeling sudden cold spots, hearing disembodied voices, and experiencing an overwhelming sense of unease in this area.
Other reported phenomena include objects moving on their own, lights turning on and off inexplicably, and the sound of children laughing when no children are present. Some staff members have claimed to feel an invisible presence touching them while working alone in the building.
