Ye Olde Malthouse
Ye Olde Malthouse in Tintagel, Cornwall, dates back to the 14th century and has a rich history intertwined with local legends and ghostly tales. Originally built as a malting house for brewing beer, the building later served as a smugglers’ hideout during the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure’s thick stone walls and hidden passages made it an ideal location for storing contraband.
Over the years, numerous paranormal experiences have been reported at Ye Olde Malthouse. Staff and visitors have described hearing unexplained footsteps echoing through empty rooms and corridors, often accompanied by the sensation of being watched. Some have claimed to see the apparition of a young woman in period dress, believed to be the spirit of a smuggler’s lover who died tragically on the premises.
Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of barrels being rolled across the floor, reminiscent of the building’s past as a malting house. This ghostly activity is often accompanied by the scent of hops and yeast, despite no brewing taking place on site for centuries.
In the 1970s, a group of visitors reported seeing a spectral figure of a man in old-fashioned clothing standing at the top of the stairs before vanishing into thin air. Local legend suggests this could be the ghost of a notorious smuggler who met his demise in a violent confrontation with authorities.
More recently, electronic equipment has been known to malfunction inexplicably within the building, with batteries draining rapidly and cameras failing to capture images in certain areas. These occurrences have added to the mystery surrounding Ye Olde Malthouse and its reputation as one of Tintagel’s most haunted locations.
