Ye Olde Leathern Bottle

Ye Olde Leathern Bottle is a historic pub located in Sandwell, West Midlands, England. Dating back to the 17th century, this Grade II listed building has a rich history and is known for its reported paranormal activity.

The pub’s origins can be traced to 1627 when it was constructed as a coaching inn. It served as a stopping point for travelers along the busy route between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. The building’s distinctive timber-framed structure and leaded windows are characteristic of its Tudor-era architecture.

Over the centuries, Ye Olde Leathern Bottle has been the site of numerous ghostly encounters. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the upper floors and staircase. Staff and patrons have described hearing her footsteps and giggles echoing through the building.

Another notable spirit is believed to be a former landlord from the 18th century. Witnesses have reported seeing a man in period dress behind the bar, sometimes moving objects or causing glasses to fall inexplicably.

The pub’s cellar is said to be particularly active, with reports of cold spots, unexplained noises, and feelings of unease. Some staff members have refused to enter the cellar alone due to these experiences.

In the 1990s, a team of paranormal investigators conducted an overnight study at Ye Olde Leathern Bottle. They reported capturing EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and experiencing sudden temperature drops in various areas of the building.

Local legend tells of a secret tunnel connecting the pub to nearby St. Bartholomew’s Church, though its existence has never been confirmed. Some speculate this alleged tunnel could be the source of some paranormal activity.
