Ye Olde Dolphin Inne

Ye Olde Dolphin Inne, located in Derby, England, is one of the oldest pubs in the city, dating back to 1530. Originally built as a coaching inn, it has served as a public house for nearly five centuries. The building’s timber-framed structure and original features have been preserved, offering a glimpse into Tudor-era architecture.

Throughout its long history, the inn has been associated with numerous ghost stories and paranormal encounters. One of the most well-known tales involves the spirit of a young boy who allegedly haunts the cellar. According to legend, the boy was the victim of an illegal medical experiment conducted by a group of doctors in the 18th century. Visitors and staff have reported hearing the sound of a child crying and feeling an unseen presence in the cellar area.

Another frequently reported apparition is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen on the building’s upper floors. Witnesses describe her as having long, dark hair and a pale complexion. Some claim to have heard her footsteps or seen her reflection in mirrors.

The inn’s main bar area is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord, who is believed to have committed suicide on the premises. Staff members have reported glasses moving on their own and the feeling of being watched when alone in the bar.

In the 1970s, a notorious murder took place at the inn when a customer was stabbed to death during a fight. Since then, patrons have reported seeing a shadowy figure and experiencing sudden cold spots in the area where the incident occurred.

The building’s long history has also given rise to reports of residual hauntings, with witnesses claiming to hear the sounds of old-fashioned revelry and music when the pub is empty. Some have even reported glimpsing figures in period costume that vanish when approached.
