The hall was originally built for Robert Tatton in 1540 and remained in the Tatton family for over 400 years. Throughout its history, the hall has witnessed significant events, including a siege during the English Civil War in 1643, when Robert Tatton’s descendant, also named Robert, fought on the Royalist side.
The hall is reportedly haunted by several ghosts, with numerous documented accounts of paranormal activity. One of the most well-known spirits is that of a servant girl named Mary Webb, who was allegedly murdered by a stable hand in the 16th century. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her ghostly figure wandering the halls and grounds. Other paranormal occurrences include sightings of a spectral dog, unexplained footsteps, and disembodied voices. In the tapestry room, people have reported feeling a strange presence and experiencing sudden temperature drops. The hall’s rich history and eerie atmosphere have made it a popular destination for those interested in the paranormal, with many ghost stories and legends surrounding the property.
