Woburn Abbey
Woburn Abbey, located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire, has a rich history dating back to 1145 when it was founded as a Cistercian abbey. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, King Henry VIII granted the estate to John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford. The Russell family, later becoming the Dukes of Bedford, have owned and resided in Woburn Abbey since then.
The abbey has been the site of numerous reported paranormal occurrences over the centuries. One of the most well-known ghost stories involves the spirit of a young Benedictine monk who allegedly haunts the Abbey’s King’s Room. Witnesses have reported seeing the monk’s apparition and hearing the rustling of his robes.
Another frequently reported ghost is that of the “Grey Lady,” believed to be the spirit of a former housekeeper. She has been seen gliding through the corridors and disappearing through walls. Staff and visitors have also reported unexplained cold spots and feelings of being watched in various parts of the building.
The Crypt Stairs are said to be haunted by the ghost of a young servant girl who fell to her death there in the 18th century. People have reported hearing her footsteps and feeling a presence on the stairs.
In the library, books have been known to mysteriously fall from shelves, and the ghost of a former Duke of Bedford has allegedly been seen sitting in his favorite chair.
The Long Gallery is another area of paranormal activity, with reports of ghostly figures, unexplained noises, and objects moving on their own. Some visitors have claimed to feel a sense of unease or oppression in this part of the abbey.
