Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, has been a royal residence for over 900 years. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has been home to 39 monarchs and witnessed countless historical events. The castle’s long history has given rise to numerous ghost stories and reported paranormal encounters.
One of the most famous ghostly residents is said to be King Henry VIII, whose heavy footsteps have been heard echoing through the castle’s corridors. Staff and visitors have reported seeing his imposing figure in the cloisters near St. George’s Chapel, where he is buried.
Queen Elizabeth I is another royal spirit believed to haunt Windsor Castle. Her apparition has been seen in the library, often described as a tall figure dressed in a black gown. Some witnesses claim to have heard the rustle of her dress as she moves through the room.
The ghost of King George III, who suffered from mental illness in his later years, has been reported in a room below the library. During his lifetime, he was often confined there during his periods of illness. Staff have described hearing him muttering incoherently from behind the locked door.
King Charles I, executed in 1649, is said to haunt the Canon’s House. His headless figure has been seen wandering the rooms, a somber reminder of his tragic fate. The sound of his footsteps has been heard pacing anxiously in the rooms where he was held prisoner before his execution.
