Warwick Castle
Warwick Castle, situated on a sandstone bluff overlooking the River Avon, has stood as a formidable fortress since the 11th century. Originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068, it was later rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. The castle played a significant role in English history, serving as a stronghold for various noble families, including the powerful Earls of Warwick.
The castle’s long and turbulent history has given rise to numerous ghost stories. One of the most well-known apparitions is that of Sir Fulke Greville, who was murdered by his servant in 1628. Visitors have reported seeing his ghost in the tower where he met his demise, now known as the Ghost Tower. Some claim to have heard his agonized screams echoing through the castle halls.
Another frequently reported spirit is that of a young girl named Moll Bloxham. Legend has it that she was accused of witchcraft and cursed the castle before being executed. Her ghost is said to wander the grounds, often accompanied by the sound of rattling chains.
The castle’s dungeons are also said to be haunted by the spirits of prisoners who suffered and died there. Visitors have reported feeling sudden cold spots, hearing unexplained footsteps, and experiencing an overwhelming sense of dread in these areas.
In the Caesar’s Tower, staff and guests have reported encountering the ghost of a young boy, believed to be a former servant who fell to his death from the tower’s heights. His apparition is often seen peering from windows or heard sobbing in the corridors.
