Waggon and Horses
The Waggon and Horses is a historic pub located in Elstree, Hertsmere, dating back to the 17th century. Originally built as a coaching inn, it served travelers along the old Roman road between London and St. Albans. The building’s timber-framed structure and low ceilings are characteristic of its age.
Over the centuries, the Waggon and Horses has been the subject of numerous ghostly tales. One of the most persistent stories involves the spirit of a young woman dressed in white, believed to be a former barmaid. Witnesses have reported seeing her apparition in the bar area and hearing unexplained footsteps upstairs.
Another frequently mentioned entity is that of an elderly man, often seen sitting in a corner of the pub. Some patrons have described feeling a cold presence or sensing someone watching them when the area is seemingly empty.
The pub’s cellar has been a hotspot for paranormal activity, with staff reporting objects moving on their own and strange noises emanating from below. Some have claimed to hear the sound of horses’ hooves, possibly echoing the building’s past as a coaching inn.
In the 1970s, a local medium conducted an investigation at the Waggon and Horses, reportedly making contact with several spirits. According to the medium’s account, one of the entities was a former innkeeper who had died in the building.
The Waggon and Horses’ reputation for supernatural occurrences has persisted into modern times, with both staff and patrons continuing to report unusual experiences within its historic walls.
