Victoria Hall

Victoria Hall

Victoria Hall in Craven, North Yorkshire, was built in 1871 as a memorial to Queen Victoria’s late husband, Prince Albert. The Grade II listed building was designed by local architect William Sugden in the Italianate style and served as a public assembly hall for the community.

Over the years, Victoria Hall has accrued a reputation for paranormal activity. Several ghostly encounters have been reported by staff and visitors. One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the corridors or sitting in the auditorium. Some witnesses claim to have heard her giggling or singing.

Another recurring phenomenon is the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through the empty building, particularly in the upper floors and backstage areas. Staff members have reported feeling watched when alone in certain rooms, especially the dressing rooms and the balcony area.

There have been accounts of objects moving on their own, including chairs in the auditorium being rearranged overnight when the building was securely locked. Some visitors have reported sudden cold spots and an overwhelming sense of unease in specific areas of the hall.

One of the more dramatic incidents involved a caretaker who claimed to have seen a full-bodied apparition of a man in Victorian attire standing on the stage, only to vanish when approached. Some speculate this could be the spirit of a performer from the hall’s early days.

The building’s basement has also been a hotspot for paranormal experiences, with reports of disembodied voices and unexplained banging sounds. Several people have reported feeling physically pushed or touched by unseen hands in this area.
