True Crimes Museum

True Crimes Museum

The True Crime Museum in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, is housed in a series of subterranean caves carved into the cliff face beneath the town. Originally used for smuggling operations in the 18th and 19th centuries, these caves later served as air raid shelters during World War II. The museum, which opened in 2014, now showcases artifacts and exhibits related to infamous criminals and notorious crimes.

Since its opening, staff and visitors have reported numerous unexplained phenomena within the cave system. Several guests have described feeling an unseen presence following them through the dimly lit tunnels, while others have reported sudden drops in temperature in specific areas. Museum employees have recounted instances of objects moving on their own, particularly in the displays dedicated to serial killers.

One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young woman in Victorian-era clothing, believed to be connected to a gruesome murder that occurred in the area during the late 1800s. Visitors have claimed to see her reflection in the glass displays or glimpse her figure disappearing around corners.

Another recurring phenomenon involves the sound of distant screams echoing through the caves, often heard late at night by security staff. Some theorize these sounds may be residual hauntings from the caves’ time as air raid shelters during World War II.

In the section dedicated to infamous gangsters, multiple visitors have reported feeling a sense of dread and an oppressive atmosphere. Some have even claimed to see shadowy figures lurking in the corners, only to vanish when approached.
