Towneley Hall
Towneley Hall, located in Burnley, Lancashire, England, is a historic country house dating back to the 14th century. The Towneley family occupied the estate for over 500 years until 1902 when it was sold to Burnley Corporation. The hall features a blend of architectural styles, including medieval, Elizabethan, and Victorian elements.
Several ghost stories are associated with Towneley Hall. One of the most well-known spirits is said to be that of Sir John Towneley, who lived in the 16th century. Witnesses have reported seeing his apparition in the corridors and hearing the sound of footsteps when no one else is present.
Another reported ghost is the “White Lady,” believed to be Elizabeth Towneley. According to legend, she was locked in a small room by her brothers to prevent her from marrying a man they disapproved of. Her spirit is said to haunt the hall, particularly in the area near where she was allegedly confined.
Staff and visitors have reported unexplained phenomena throughout the building, including sudden temperature drops, objects moving on their own, and doors opening and closing without apparent cause. The kitchen area is said to be particularly active, with reports of pots and pans clanging when the room is empty.
In the Long Gallery, people have claimed to see the apparition of a young boy, while others have reported feeling a presence and hearing childlike laughter. The hall’s extensive art collection has also been the subject of paranormal claims, with some visitors reporting that the eyes in certain portraits seem to follow them as they move through the room.
