Thundridge Church
Thundridge Church, officially known as St Mary and All Saints Church, stands in East Hertfordshire, England. The original church dates back to the 12th century, though much of the current structure was rebuilt in the 19th century. The old church tower, now a ruin, remains on a nearby hilltop and is known as “Cold Christmas Church.”
The site has a long history of reported paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghost stories associated with Thundridge Church involves the apparition of a Roman soldier. Witnesses claim to have seen the ghostly figure marching along an old Roman road that once passed near the church.
Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of children singing coming from within the empty church. Some locals believe these are the spirits of children who were buried in the churchyard centuries ago.
The ruined tower of the old church is said to be particularly active. Visitors have reported feeling a sense of unease and experiencing sudden temperature drops near the structure. Some claim to have seen shadowy figures moving around the tower at night.
There are also accounts of a phantom horse and rider seen galloping through the churchyard. This apparition is sometimes associated with a local legend of a nobleman who died in a riding accident near the church.
In the 1970s, a group of teenagers reportedly encountered a ghostly monk while exploring the church grounds at night. The figure was described as wearing a dark robe and hood, and disappeared when approached.
The church’s ancient graveyard has its own share of paranormal tales, with reports of glowing orbs and unexplained mists appearing in photographs taken there.
