Thimblemill Library
Thimblemill Library, located in Smethwick, Sandwell, opened its doors in 1937 as part of the area’s expanding public services. The building, constructed in the Art Deco style, has served as a community hub for over eight decades. During World War II, the library’s basement was used as an air raid shelter, providing safety for local residents during German bombing raids.
The library has garnered attention for its reported paranormal activity over the years. Staff and visitors have recounted unexplained occurrences, particularly in the older sections of the building. One of the most frequently reported phenomena is the sound of footsteps echoing through empty corridors and book stacks when no one else is present.
Several witnesses have described seeing a ghostly figure of a woman in 1930s-style clothing, believed by some to be a former librarian. This apparition has been spotted in various areas of the library, often disappearing when approached. Some staff members have reported books falling from shelves without apparent cause, and items being moved or misplaced overnight.
In the children’s section, there have been accounts of disembodied laughter and the sound of pages turning when the area is empty. Some visitors have reported sudden cold spots and feelings of being watched, particularly in the library’s older reading rooms.
The basement, which served as the air raid shelter, has been a focal point for paranormal claims. People have reported hearing muffled conversations and the sounds of distant explosions, reminiscent of the building’s wartime history. Staff working late have sometimes reported feeling an unseen presence in this area.
