The Swan
The Swan in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, is a historic pub with roots dating back to the 17th century. Originally a coaching inn, it served travelers along the old turnpike road between London and Bedford. The building’s architecture reflects its age, with exposed timber beams and an old fireplace still visible.
During the English Civil War, The Swan reportedly housed both Royalist and Parliamentarian troops at different times. Local legend suggests that secret passages once connected the pub to nearby buildings, though none have been confirmed.
The pub’s paranormal reputation centers on several reported ghostly encounters. Staff and patrons have described seeing a tall, dark figure in old-fashioned clothing, believed to be a former innkeeper from the 18th century. This apparition is often spotted near the bar area or in the upstairs rooms.
Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of footsteps and doors opening and closing when no one is present. Some witnesses claim to have heard muffled conversations and laughter coming from empty rooms.
In the 1970s, a barmaid reportedly saw a young girl in Victorian-era dress playing in the garden. When approached, the child vanished. This sighting has been repeated by others over the years, leading to speculation about a tragic event in the pub’s past.
Objects have been known to move on their own, particularly in the kitchen area. Staff have reported finding items in different locations from where they were left, and some have experienced an unexplained cold spot near the old fireplace.
During renovation work in the 1990s, workers uncovered old coins and a small shoe hidden in the walls, possibly placed there as charms against evil spirits, a common practice in earlier centuries.
