The Shakespeare Hotel

The Shakespeare Hotel

The Shakespeare Hotel, situated in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, dates back to the 16th century and has long been associated with ghostly encounters. Originally comprised of three separate buildings, the hotel was converted into a single establishment in the 1920s. Its rich history and connection to William Shakespeare’s birthplace have made it a popular destination for tourists and paranormal enthusiasts alike.

One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the corridors of the hotel’s upper floors. Staff and guests have described hearing her footsteps and giggles echoing through empty hallways, particularly during quiet nights.

The hotel’s cellar, which once served as a temporary morgue during times of plague, is said to be haunted by the spirits of those who perished during these outbreaks. Employees have reported feeling sudden cold spots and experiencing an overwhelming sense of unease while working in the basement area.

In the hotel’s restaurant, patrons and staff have witnessed glasses and cutlery moving on their own, seemingly pushed by unseen hands. Some have even claimed to see the ghostly figure of a man in Elizabethan attire sitting at one of the tables, only to vanish when approached.

The most famous spectral resident is believed to be that of Lucy Hansard, a former owner of one of the original buildings. Guests staying in rooms near her former living quarters have reported hearing disembodied voices and experiencing unexplained temperature fluctuations. Some have even claimed to see Lucy’s apparition standing at the foot of their beds or gazing out of windows overlooking the street below.
