The Scotsman Hotel
The Scotsman Hotel, located on North Bridge in Edinburgh, was originally constructed in 1905 as the headquarters for The Scotsman newspaper. The Baroque-style building, designed by architects Dunn & Findlay, housed the newspaper’s operations until 1999 when it was converted into a luxury hotel.
During its time as a newspaper office, the building witnessed the hectic activity of journalists and printing presses. This bustling history is said to have left an imprint on the structure, with several ghostly encounters reported over the years.
One of the most frequently encountered spirits is believed to be a former printer who worked in the building. Staff and guests have reported hearing the sounds of printing presses running late at night, long after the machinery was removed. The ghostly noises are often accompanied by the smell of ink and paper.
Another recurring apparition is that of a man dressed in early 20th-century attire, believed to be a former editor. He has been seen walking through corridors and disappearing through walls, particularly on the upper floors where the editorial offices were once located.
In the hotel’s basement, which previously housed the printing presses, employees have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere and sensing an unseen presence. Some have experienced sudden temperature drops and the sensation of being watched.
Guests staying in rooms that were once part of the newspaper offices have reported items being moved inexplicably and lights turning on and off by themselves. Some have even claimed to see shadowy figures at the foot of their beds or reflected in mirrors.
The hotel’s grand staircase has been the site of several paranormal experiences, with guests and staff reporting the sound of footsteps when no one is visible. Some have also claimed to see a female apparition descending the stairs, dressed in period clothing from the early 1900s.
