The Red Lion
The Red Lion, a historic pub located in Cheslyn Hay, South Staffordshire, dates back to the 18th century. Originally serving as a coaching inn, it has witnessed centuries of local history and become a focal point for numerous ghostly encounters. The pub’s most famous spectral resident is believed to be the spirit of a young girl named Emily, who reportedly died in a fire that engulfed the building in the early 1900s. Patrons and staff have reported seeing her apparition in various areas of the pub, often accompanied by the smell of burning wood.
Another frequently encountered ghost is that of a former landlord, thought to have lived in the early 19th century. Witnesses describe seeing a man in period clothing walking through walls and disappearing into thin air. Some staff members have reported feeling an unseen presence watching them while working alone in the cellar.
The pub’s upstairs rooms, once used as guest accommodation, are said to be particularly active. Visitors have reported hearing footsteps, disembodied voices, and the sound of furniture being moved when the rooms were empty. In one instance, a guest claimed to have seen the figure of a woman in Victorian dress standing at the foot of their bed before vanishing.
The car park area has also been the site of paranormal activity, with several people reporting the apparition of a horse-drawn carriage that seems to materialize and then fade away. This phenomenon is believed to be connected to the pub’s history as a coaching inn.
