The Old Vic Theatre
The Old Vic Theatre in Bristol, England, originally opened in 1766 as the Theatre Royal. It is one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the English-speaking world. The building has undergone several renovations and reconstructions over its long history, with the current structure dating back to 1946 after the original was destroyed during World War II.
Throughout its existence, the Old Vic has been the subject of numerous ghostly tales and paranormal encounters. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of Sarah Macready, a former actress and theatre manager from the 19th century. Staff and visitors have claimed to see her ghostly figure in period dress, particularly in the auditorium and backstage areas.
Another well-known spirit is said to be that of a young girl who allegedly fell to her death from the upper circle during a performance in the early 1900s. Witnesses have reported hearing unexplained footsteps and giggles, as well as feeling a cold presence in the area where she supposedly died.
The theatre’s Green Room is also a hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of objects moving on their own, unexplained cold spots, and the feeling of being watched when no one else is present. Some staff members have reported hearing disembodied voices and seeing shadowy figures in the corridors late at night.
During World War II, the theatre was used as a fire station, and some believe the spirits of firefighters who died during air raids still linger in the building. Visitors have reported smelling smoke and hearing the sound of alarms when no fire is present.
