The Old Kings Head

The Old King’s Head, a 16th-century coaching inn located in Windsor, has a long and storied history intertwined with tales of supernatural occurrences. This historic pub, situated near Windsor Castle, has been a witness to centuries of local events and royal connections. Over the years, numerous ghostly encounters have been reported by staff and patrons alike.

One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a young woman in Victorian-era clothing, often seen walking through the bar area before vanishing into thin air. Some witnesses have described feeling a sudden chill or sensing an unseen presence when she appears. Another recurring phenomenon involves the sound of footsteps echoing from empty rooms upstairs, particularly late at night when the pub is closed.

Staff members have reported instances of glasses moving on their own, seemingly pushed by invisible hands. In the cellar, barrels have been known to inexplicably roll across the floor, startling workers and creating an atmosphere of unease. Guests staying in the inn’s rooms have recounted waking to find their belongings rearranged or feeling the sensation of being watched while they sleep.

One of the most chilling accounts involves the apparition of a Civil War-era soldier, believed to be a Royalist supporter, who has been seen standing at attention near the fireplace. His presence is often accompanied by the smell of gunpowder and tobacco smoke. Some patrons have reported hearing whispered conversations in empty corners of the pub, with words occasionally becoming clear enough to discern mentions of long-past events and long-dead individuals.
