The Old Church House Inn
The Old Church House Inn in Torbryan, Teignbridge, dates back to the 13th century, originally serving as a rest house for monks and pilgrims traveling between abbeys. Over the centuries, it transformed into a coaching inn and later a public house, retaining much of its medieval character.
Ghostly occurrences at the inn have been reported for generations. One of the most frequently encountered spirits is that of a young girl, believed to be around 12 years old, who has been seen wandering the corridors and staircases. Guests and staff have described hearing her footsteps and giggles, particularly in the upstairs rooms.
Another recurring apparition is that of a monk, often spotted in the bar area and near the fireplace. Witnesses have described seeing a hooded figure that quickly vanishes when approached. Some patrons have reported feeling a sudden chill or sensing an unseen presence while enjoying their drinks.
The inn’s kitchen is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former cook. Staff members have reported pots and pans moving on their own, and some have claimed to smell phantom aromas of cooking when the kitchen was empty.
In the 1970s, a séance was conducted at the inn, during which participants reportedly made contact with multiple spirits. One spirit identified itself as a former innkeeper who had lived there in the 18th century.
More recently, paranormal investigators have captured unexplained sounds and temperature fluctuations during overnight investigations at the Old Church House Inn, adding to its reputation as one of Devon’s most haunted locations.
