The Muckleburgh Collection
The Muckleburgh Collection, located in Weybourne, North Norfolk, occupies the site of a former military camp with roots dating back to World War I. Initially established as a secret training base for artillery units, the area played a crucial role in coastal defense during both world wars. The camp expanded significantly during World War II, housing anti-aircraft guns and serving as a key defense point against potential German invasion.
After the war, the site continued its military function, hosting various army units and serving as a training ground until its closure in the 1980s. The Muckleburgh Collection was established shortly after, preserving the site’s military heritage and showcasing an extensive array of military vehicles and equipment.
The site’s long and sometimes turbulent history has given rise to several ghost stories and reported paranormal phenomena. Staff and visitors have reported unexplained footsteps echoing through empty corridors and the sound of doors slamming when no one is present. Some have claimed to see shadowy figures in military attire, particularly in the areas housing World War II-era exhibits.
One recurring tale involves the apparition of a young soldier, believed to be from the World War II period, seen patrolling the perimeter of the former camp. Others have reported hearing the distant rumble of artillery fire and the muffled voices of men in combat, especially on quiet nights.
In the museum’s vehicle halls, there have been accounts of engines mysteriously starting up on their own and the smell of exhaust fumes when all vehicles are inactive. Some visitors have reported feeling sudden cold spots and an overwhelming sense of being watched while exploring the exhibits.
