The Mill Street Barracks
The Mill Street Barracks in St Helens, Merseyside, dates back to 1861 when it was built as a training facility for local volunteer forces. During World War I, it served as a recruitment center and temporary hospital for wounded soldiers. The barracks continued to be used for military purposes until 1967 when it was decommissioned.
Over the years, numerous paranormal experiences have been reported at the Mill Street Barracks. Staff and visitors have described hearing unexplained footsteps echoing through empty corridors and the sound of doors slamming shut on their own. Some have claimed to see the apparition of a soldier in uniform walking through walls or standing at attention in various rooms.
One of the most frequently reported phenomena is the sensation of being watched, particularly in the old dormitory areas. People have described feeling a sudden drop in temperature and an oppressive atmosphere in certain parts of the building.
In the former officers’ mess, witnesses have reported seeing glasses and objects move on their own, as well as hearing muffled conversations when no one else is present. Some visitors have even claimed to smell tobacco smoke in this area, despite smoking being prohibited in the building.
The parade ground has been the site of several reported sightings of ghostly figures marching in formation, visible for a few moments before vanishing into thin air. Additionally, disembodied voices giving military commands have been heard in this area, particularly during quiet evenings.
