The Malthouse
The Malthouse in Walsall, West Midlands, dates back to the 18th century when it served as a malt house for the local brewing industry. The building’s rich history has given rise to numerous ghost stories and reported paranormal encounters over the years. Staff and visitors have reported strange occurrences, particularly in the basement area, where the malting process once took place.
One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a former worker, believed to be from the Victorian era, who is said to appear in period clothing near the old kilns. Witnesses describe seeing him going about his daily tasks before vanishing into thin air. Another ghostly figure often seen is a young girl in a white dress, who has been spotted running through the corridors and disappearing through walls.
Unexplained noises are common at The Malthouse, with many reporting the sounds of heavy footsteps echoing through empty rooms and the clanking of machinery long since removed. Some visitors have claimed to hear hushed whispers and muffled conversations when no one else is present.
Objects have been known to move on their own, with staff reporting items being displaced overnight when the building was securely locked. Cold spots and sudden temperature drops have been experienced throughout the structure, particularly in areas where paranormal activity is said to be most frequent.
During renovation work in the 1990s, workers reported tools going missing and reappearing in different locations, as well as feeling an unseen presence watching them as they worked. These experiences have contributed to The Malthouse’s reputation as one of Walsall’s most haunted locations.
