The Jubilee

The Jubilee

The Jubilee in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, is a historic pub dating back to the late 18th century. Located in the village of Sowerby Bridge, the building originally served as a coaching inn for travelers along the Calder Valley. Its name commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.

Over the centuries, the Jubilee has accumulated a reputation for paranormal activity. Staff and patrons have reported numerous ghostly encounters within its walls. One of the most frequently sighted spirits is that of a young girl, believed to be around 8-10 years old, often seen wandering the upper floors and staircase. Witnesses describe her as wearing Victorian-era clothing and having long, dark hair.

Another recurring apparition is that of an elderly man, usually spotted in the bar area. He is said to appear seated at a table, nursing a pint of ale, before vanishing when approached. Some speculate he may be a former regular who has continued to frequent his favorite haunt even after death.

The cellar has been a hotspot for unexplained phenomena, with staff reporting feelings of unease, sudden temperature drops, and the sensation of being watched. Objects have allegedly moved on their own, and the sound of footsteps has been heard when no one else is present.

In the 1990s, a landlord reported waking to find all the pub’s chairs stacked in neat piles, despite having left them in their usual positions the night before. This incident remains unexplained.

Paranormal investigators have conducted several investigations at the Jubilee, recording EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and capturing anomalous images on camera. While some attribute these occurrences to the building’s long history and the emotions imprinted on its surroundings, others remain convinced of a genuine supernatural presence at the Jubilee.
