The George & Dragon
The George & Dragon pub in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, dates back to the 16th century and has a rich history intertwined with the infamous Hellfire Club. The pub served as a meeting place for members of the secretive society, founded by Sir Francis Dashwood in the 1740s. The Hellfire Club was known for its controversial gatherings and alleged occult practices, which took place in nearby West Wycombe Caves.
Over the years, numerous ghostly encounters have been reported at The George & Dragon. Staff and patrons have witnessed the apparition of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, believed to be the spirit of a child who died in a fire at the pub during the 19th century. She is often seen wandering the upper floors and has been known to playfully tug on people’s clothing.
Another frequently reported spirit is that of a former landlord, dressed in 18th-century attire. He has been observed behind the bar, seemingly going about his duties as if still alive. Customers have reported feeling an unseen presence brushing past them in the pub’s narrow corridors.
The pub’s cellars are said to be particularly active, with staff reporting inexplicable cold spots, the sound of footsteps when no one is present, and bottles mysteriously moving on their own. Some believe these phenomena are connected to the pub’s association with the Hellfire Club and the dark rituals allegedly performed in the nearby caves.
During the Second World War, The George & Dragon housed evacuees from London. Since then, visitors have reported hearing children’s laughter and the sound of running footsteps in the upper rooms, even when the building is empty.
