The Crown
The Crown in Wells, Somerset, dates back to the 15th century and has served as a coaching inn for centuries. Located near Wells Cathedral, this historic establishment has witnessed its fair share of paranormal activity over the years. One of the most frequently reported ghostly encounters involves the spirit of a former landlord who allegedly hanged himself in one of the upstairs rooms. Staff and guests have reported hearing unexplained footsteps and witnessing doors opening and closing on their own, particularly in the areas near where the tragic event is said to have occurred.
Another recurring ghostly figure is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the corridors late at night. Witnesses describe her as having long, dark hair and a pale complexion. Some guests have reported waking up to find her standing at the foot of their bed, only to vanish moments later.
The pub’s cellar is also a hotspot for paranormal activity, with staff members reporting an oppressive atmosphere and the sensation of being watched. Some have even claimed to hear whispered conversations when the cellar is empty.
During renovation work in the 1980s, workers uncovered a hidden room containing old documents and personal effects. Since then, guests have reported seeing the apparition of a man dressed in 18th-century clothing near the location of this discovery. This spirit is often described as appearing confused or lost, possibly connected to the items found in the secret room.
