The Bush Inn
The Bush Inn, situated in Cleave, Devon, dates back to the 16th century. Originally built as a farmhouse, it was converted into an inn during the 17th century to serve travelers along the nearby coaching route. The building’s thick stone walls and low-beamed ceilings reflect its age and traditional construction.
Throughout its history, the Bush Inn has been the site of numerous reported paranormal occurrences. One of the most prominent ghost stories involves the spirit of a young woman dressed in white, believed to be a former barmaid from the 18th century. Witnesses have reported seeing her apparition in the main bar area and upstairs bedrooms.
Another frequently encountered entity is that of an elderly man, often seen sitting by the fireplace in the lounge. Staff and guests have described hearing his ghostly footsteps and feeling an unseen presence brush past them in the narrow corridors.
The inn’s cellar is said to be particularly active, with reports of objects moving on their own and sudden temperature drops. Some have claimed to hear the sound of barrels being rolled and glasses clinking when the cellar was empty.
In the 1970s, a former landlord reported waking up to find all the furniture in his bedroom rearranged. This incident was followed by several nights of unexplained noises and doors slamming shut on their own.
During renovation work in the 1990s, workers uncovered a hidden room behind a wall in the attic. Since then, guests staying in the nearby rooms have reported hearing whispers and seeing shadow figures.
