The Bate Hall
The Bate Hall, located in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, is one of the oldest pubs in the town, dating back to the 16th century. Originally built as a manor house, it later became an inn and has served as a public house for centuries. The building’s long history has given rise to numerous ghost stories and reported paranormal activities.
One of the most well-known spectral residents is said to be a young girl named Maggie, who allegedly fell to her death from the upper floors. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her apparition on the stairs and hearing the sound of a child’s laughter echoing through empty rooms. Some have even claimed to feel a small hand tugging at their clothing.
The pub’s cellar is another hotspot for supernatural occurrences. Staff members have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere and experiencing sudden temperature drops while working in the cellar. There have been accounts of barrels mysteriously moving on their own and the sound of footsteps when no one else is present.
In the main bar area, patrons have reported seeing the ghostly figure of a man dressed in old-fashioned attire, believed to be a former landlord. He is said to appear briefly before vanishing into thin air. Others have experienced the sensation of being watched when alone in the pub.
The Bate Hall’s upper floors, now used as accommodation, have been the site of numerous paranormal experiences. Guests have reported hearing disembodied voices, seeing shadowy figures, and experiencing unexplained knocks and bangs during the night. Some have even claimed to feel an unseen presence sitting on their bed.
