Sutton Manor
Sutton Manor, located in St Helens, Merseyside, was once a thriving colliery that operated from 1906 to 1991. The site has since been transformed into a woodland area, but its industrial past lingers in the form of ghostly encounters reported by visitors. One of the most frequently seen apparitions is that of a miner, still wearing his work clothes and helmet, who appears to be searching for something. Witnesses have described feeling a sudden chill and hearing the sound of pickaxes striking rock when this spirit manifests.
Another haunting tale involves the ghost of a young boy who is said to have died in a mining accident. Visitors have reported hearing a child’s laughter echoing through the trees, only to find no one there when they investigate. Some have even claimed to see a spectral figure darting between the trees, always staying just out of clear view.
The old winding house, which once controlled the lift for miners descending into the pit, is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity. People have reported hearing the creaking of machinery and the clanking of metal, as if the long-defunct equipment has sprung back to life. On particularly dark nights, some visitors have sworn they’ve seen shadowy figures moving about inside the abandoned structure.
Perhaps the most chilling account is that of a ghostly procession seen walking along the former railway lines. Witnesses describe seeing a group of translucent miners, heads bowed, moving silently through the night before fading away into the mist.
