Sunderland Empire

Sunderland Empire

The Sunderland Empire, opened in 1907, is a grand Edwardian theatre in the heart of Sunderland, England. Known for its opulent architecture and rich history, the venue has hosted countless performances and famous actors over the decades. However, the Empire is also renowned for its paranormal activity and ghostly inhabitants.

One of the most well-known spirits is that of Sid James, the famous comedian who tragically suffered a heart attack and died on stage during a performance in 1976. Staff and visitors have reported seeing his ghostly figure in the wings and dressing rooms, sometimes accompanied by the sound of his distinctive laughter echoing through the theatre.

Another frequently encountered spirit is that of Molly Moselle, a former stage manager from the early 20th century. Molly is said to roam the theatre’s corridors, ensuring everything is in order for performances. Witnesses have described seeing a woman in Edwardian dress moving props and adjusting curtains, only to vanish when approached.

The theatre’s backstage areas are particularly active, with reports of unexplained footsteps, cold spots, and the sensation of being watched. Some performers have experienced items mysteriously moving in their dressing rooms or felt an unseen presence standing behind them while looking in the mirror.

In the auditorium, patrons and staff have reported seeing shadowy figures in period clothing seated in empty chairs, particularly in the upper circle. These apparitions are often accompanied by the faint sound of applause or murmured conversations when the theatre is empty.

The Sunderland Empire’s stage has also been the site of paranormal activity, with actors reporting feeling pushed or touched during performances, and stagehands witnessing props moving on their own.
