Stogursey Castle
Stogursey Castle, located in Somerset West and Taunton, dates back to the 11th century. Originally built as a motte-and-bailey fortress by William de Curci, it was later rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. The castle played a significant role during the Anarchy, a civil war between King Stephen and Empress Matilda in the mid-12th century.
Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times and underwent various modifications. It was eventually converted into a manor house in the 16th century. However, during the English Civil War in the 17th century, the castle was slighted to prevent its use as a military stronghold.
Stogursey Castle has a reputation for paranormal activity. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young woman in a white dress, often seen wandering the grounds or gazing out from the windows. Some witnesses claim to have heard her weeping or calling out for help.
Another ghostly figure associated with the castle is that of a tall, dark-haired man in medieval attire. He is said to appear near the gatehouse and has been described as having a stern, imposing presence.
Visitors and staff have reported unexplained cold spots, sudden temperature drops, and feelings of being watched or touched when no one else is present. Some have claimed to hear footsteps echoing through empty rooms and corridors.
There are also accounts of objects moving on their own, doors slamming shut without apparent cause, and strange mists or orbs appearing in photographs taken at the site. The sounds of battle, including clashing swords and men shouting, have been reported emanating from the grounds, particularly on quiet nights.
