Stockport Workhouse
Stockport Workhouse, located in Stockport, England, was constructed in 1841 to house and provide work for the poor and destitute. The imposing Victorian structure served as a workhouse until 1948 when it was converted into a hospital. The building’s dark history has led to numerous reported ghostly encounters over the years.
Many staff members and visitors have reported hearing the sound of children crying and laughing in empty corridors, particularly in the areas that once housed orphaned children. Some have even claimed to see the apparition of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing wandering the halls before vanishing into thin air.
The most frequently reported paranormal activity involves the ghost of a former matron. Witnesses describe seeing a stern-looking woman in a long black dress patrolling the upper floors. She is often accompanied by the sound of keys jangling and heavy footsteps echoing through the building.
In the old infirmary wing, people have reported feeling sudden drops in temperature and experiencing an overwhelming sense of sadness and despair. Some visitors have claimed to see shadowy figures moving between the beds in the now-empty wards.
The basement area, which once housed the morgue, is said to be particularly active. Staff members have reported hearing whispers and feeling unseen hands touching them while working in this area. Others have described seeing mist-like forms drifting across the room before disappearing through walls.
These reported experiences have contributed to Stockport Workhouse’s reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the Greater Manchester area.
