Stirling Old Town Jail, located in the heart of Stirling, Scotland, has a dark and troubled past dating back to 1847. The imposing Victorian-era prison was built to replace the notoriously overcrowded Tolbooth and housed both male and female inmates until its closure in 1888. During its operation, the jail was known for its harsh conditions and cruel treatment of prisoners, including the use of solitary confinement and hard labor.

Over the years, numerous paranormal encounters have been reported within the jail’s stone walls. One of the most frequently sighted spirits is that of a former jailer, believed to be the infamous William Rankin.
