Stanley Palace
Stanley Palace, located in Chester, England, is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1591. Originally built for Sir Peter Warburton, it later became the townhouse of the Stanley family, Earls of Derby. The timber-framed structure features distinctive black and white Tudor-style architecture typical of Chester.
Over the centuries, Stanley Palace has been the site of numerous reported paranormal occurrences. One of the most frequently encountered spirits is believed to be that of Elizabeth Warburton, who allegedly died falling down the stairs. Witnesses have described seeing a gray lady figure on the staircase and feeling a sudden drop in temperature in that area.
Another reported entity is a young boy, often seen playing or running through the halls. Some visitors have claimed to hear childish laughter or the sound of small footsteps when no children were present in the building.
The ghost of a Civil War soldier has also been reported, particularly in the upper floors. Witnesses describe seeing a man in 17th-century military attire, sometimes accompanied by the smell of smoke or gunpowder.
In the courtyard, people have reported seeing the apparition of a man believed to be James Stanley, the 7th Earl of Derby, who was executed in 1651. Some claim to have seen him pacing anxiously, possibly reliving his final moments before execution.
The building’s cellar has been a particular hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of disembodied voices, unexplained cold spots, and feelings of unease. Some visitors have reported feeling as if they were being watched or followed while in this area.
