South Stack Lighthouse
South Stack Lighthouse, perched atop a small island off the coast of Anglesey near Trearddur, has stood sentinel since 1809. Built to warn ships of the treacherous rocks below, the lighthouse has witnessed numerous shipwrecks and tragic events over the centuries. The isolation and harsh conditions have given rise to several ghost stories associated with the location.
One of the most well-known paranormal tales involves the apparition of a lighthouse keeper who died during a violent storm in the 19th century. Visitors have reported seeing his figure climbing the stairs or standing at the top of the tower, seemingly keeping watch over the sea. Some claim to have heard his footsteps echoing through the lighthouse, even when no one else is present.
Another ghostly encounter involves the spirit of a young woman believed to be the daughter of a former lighthouse keeper. According to local lore, she fell in love with a sailor who was lost at sea. Heartbroken, she is said to have taken her own life by jumping from the cliffs. Her ethereal form has been spotted wandering the rocky shoreline, eternally searching for her lost love.
Visitors and staff have also reported unexplained cold spots, sudden temperature drops, and the sensation of being watched within the lighthouse and its surrounding buildings. Some have described hearing disembodied voices and whispers, particularly on stormy nights when the wind howls around the structure. These eerie experiences have contributed to South Stack Lighthouse’s reputation as one of Wales’ most haunted locations.
