Shottery Manor
Shottery Manor, located in Stratford-upon-Avon, dates back to the 15th century and is steeped in history and ghostly lore. The Tudor manor house was once home to the Hathaway family, including Anne Hathaway, who became William Shakespeare’s wife. Over the centuries, the manor has witnessed numerous paranormal occurrences that have intrigued visitors and locals alike.
One of the most frequently reported ghostly sightings is that of a young woman in Tudor-era clothing, believed to be Anne Hathaway herself. Witnesses have described seeing her figure gliding through the corridors and gardens, often accompanied by the scent of lavender.
The manor’s Great Hall is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former owner, who reportedly died in a duel. Staff and guests have reported hearing the clash of swords and muffled shouts emanating from the empty room, particularly on moonlit nights.
In the attic, visitors have encountered an oppressive atmosphere and the sensation of being watched. Some have reported seeing the apparition of an elderly man in 17th-century attire, thought to be a former servant who met a tragic end in the house.
The gardens of Shottery Manor are not exempt from supernatural activity. Groundskeepers have reported tools moving on their own and the sound of ghostly footsteps crunching on gravel paths when no one is present. On misty mornings, some have glimpsed the figure of a hooded monk walking among the rose bushes, only to vanish when approached.
