Roe Valley Hospital
Roe Valley Hospital, located in Limavady, Northern Ireland, originally opened in 1842 as a workhouse for the poor. During the Great Famine of the 1840s, it housed and cared for countless starving and ill individuals. In 1948, it was converted into a hospital, serving the local community until its closure in 1997.
Over the years, staff and visitors have reported numerous paranormal encounters within the hospital’s aging walls. One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the corridors late at night. Witnesses describe her as having long, dark hair and a pale complexion, with some claiming to have heard her crying or calling out for her mother.
Another recurring phenomenon involves the sound of footsteps echoing through empty hallways, particularly in the area that once housed the hospital’s maternity ward. Staff members have reported hearing the distinct cries of infants in rooms known to be vacant, with the sounds abruptly ceasing upon investigation.
In the former psychiatric unit, security guards have reported seeing shadowy figures darting between rooms and feeling an oppressive, unseen presence. Some have described experiencing sudden drops in temperature and inexplicable feelings of dread in certain areas of this wing.
Perhaps the most chilling account comes from a former night nurse who claimed to have seen an elderly patient walking through a solid wall in the geriatric ward. Upon checking records, she discovered that a patient matching the description had died in that very room decades earlier.
