Revesby Abbey

Revesby Abbey

Revesby Abbey, located in Lincolnshire, England, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was founded as a Cistercian monastery. The original abbey was dissolved in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. In the 18th century, a new mansion was built on the site by James Paine for Joseph Banks, father of the famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

The current Revesby Abbey, constructed in the 19th century, is said to be haunted by several spirits. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen wandering the grounds and peering out of windows. Visitors have described feeling a sudden chill and sensing an unseen presence when encountering this spectral figure.

Another ghostly resident is believed to be a monk from the original abbey. Witnesses have reported seeing a dark, hooded figure gliding silently through the corridors and disappearing through walls. Some have even claimed to hear faint chanting echoing through the building late at night.

The ghost of Sir Joseph Banks himself is said to haunt the library, where staff and visitors have reported books mysteriously falling from shelves and the smell of tobacco smoke lingering in the air. Footsteps have been heard pacing the room when no one is present.

In the grounds, people have reported seeing shadowy figures moving among the trees and hearing disembodied voices near the remains of the old abbey. Some visitors have experienced sudden feelings of dread or sadness in certain areas of the estate, particularly near the old family cemetery.
