RAF Tilstock
RAF Tilstock, located in Whitchurch Rural, Shropshire, was a Royal Air Force station operational during World War II. Constructed in 1940, it served as a satellite airfield for RAF Peplow and later became a training base for glider pilots and paratroopers. The airfield played a crucial role in preparing forces for the D-Day landings and Operation Market Garden.
Over the years, RAF Tilstock has gained a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and locals have reported eerie encounters on the former airbase grounds. One recurring ghost story involves the sighting of a spectral airman walking along the old runway, only to vanish into thin air when approached. Some witnesses claim to have heard the distant sound of propeller engines and seen ghostly aircraft lights in the sky, despite no planes being present.
Another chilling tale centers around the control tower, where staff members have reported feeling an unseen presence and hearing unexplained footsteps echoing through the empty building. Some have even claimed to see the apparition of a young pilot in full uniform, staring out of the tower windows.
The nearby woods have also been the subject of paranormal reports. Locals have described hearing disembodied voices and witnessing shadowy figures moving between the trees at dusk. Some believe these to be the restless spirits of airmen who lost their lives during training exercises or combat missions.
One particularly haunting account involves the ghostly recreation of a fatal crash. Witnesses have reported seeing a phantom aircraft descending rapidly before disappearing just above the treeline, accompanied by the sound of a muffled explosion.
