Queen Street Masonic Temple
The Queen Street Masonic Temple in Sunderland, built in 1932, stands as a testament to the city’s Masonic history. This imposing structure has been the subject of numerous paranormal reports over the years. Staff and visitors have reported unexplained footsteps echoing through empty corridors, particularly in the upper floors of the building. Some have described hearing whispered conversations and muffled laughter when no one else was present.
One of the most frequently reported phenomena is the sighting of a ghostly figure in Masonic regalia, believed to be a former member of the lodge. This apparition has been seen gliding through the main hall and disappearing through solid walls. In the 1980s, a caretaker reported seeing this figure late at night while locking up the building.
The temple’s basement has been a hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of sudden temperature drops and an overwhelming sense of being watched. Several people have described feeling an unseen hand touch their shoulder or tug on their clothing in this area.
During a renovation in the 1990s, workers reported tools moving on their own and inexplicable knocking sounds coming from inside the walls. One worker claimed to have seen a misty form materialize and dissipate near the grand staircase.
In 2008, a group of visitors reported hearing a disembodied voice chanting what sounded like a Masonic ritual in an empty room. This incident coincided with several people experiencing sudden bouts of dizziness and nausea in the same area.
