Portlick Castle
Portlick Castle, located on the shores of Lough Ree in County Westmeath, Ireland, dates back to the 12th century. The castle was originally built by the de Lacy family and later occupied by the Dillon clan for several centuries. In the 1600s, it passed to the Handcock family, who held it until the early 20th century.
The castle’s long history has given rise to several ghost stories. One of the most well-known involves the spirit of a young woman believed to be a member of the Handcock family. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her apparition wandering the castle grounds, particularly near the lakeside. She is often described as wearing a flowing white dress and appearing distressed or searching for something.
Another frequently reported paranormal occurrence at Portlick Castle is the sound of disembodied footsteps echoing through the halls, particularly in the upper floors of the building. These footsteps are sometimes accompanied by the rustling of fabric, as if an unseen person in period dress is moving through the castle.
Some visitors have claimed to experience sudden and inexplicable temperature drops in certain areas of the castle, particularly in the old bedchambers. These cold spots are often accompanied by a feeling of unease or being watched.
There have also been reports of objects moving on their own, especially in the castle’s kitchen area. Staff members have described finding items in different locations from where they were left, with no apparent explanation for their movement.
