Plas Mawr

Plas Mawr

Plas Mawr, located in Conwy, Wales, is a well-preserved Elizabethan townhouse built between 1576 and 1585 by Robert Wynn, a wealthy merchant. The name translates to “Great Hall” in Welsh. The house is renowned for its ornate plasterwork, intricate decorations, and period furnishings, offering a glimpse into 16th-century Welsh gentry life.

The building has a long history of reported paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghost stories involves the spirit of Robert Wynn’s wife, Dorothy, who allegedly died during childbirth in the house. According to legend, Robert Wynn was away when complications arose during Dorothy’s labor. The midwife, desperate for help, sent a servant to fetch a doctor. However, the servant fell on the stairs, breaking his neck. Dorothy and her baby both perished. It is said that Dorothy’s ghost still wanders the house, particularly in the room where she died, searching for her lost child.

Another frequently reported apparition is that of a young girl seen on the staircases and in the upper rooms. Some visitors have claimed to hear children’s laughter echoing through empty corridors.

The kitchen area is said to be haunted by the ghost of a maid who died in a fire. Witnesses have reported seeing her apparition and smelling smoke when no fire is burning.

Unexplained cold spots, sudden temperature drops, and feelings of being watched are commonly reported throughout the building. Some visitors and staff members have described hearing footsteps in empty rooms and witnessing objects moving on their own.

The Great Chamber, known for its elaborate plasterwork ceiling, is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with guests reporting feelings of unease and the sensation of being touched by unseen hands.
