Petty France Manor

Petty France Manor

Petty France Manor is a historic estate located in Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucestershire, England. The manor house dates back to the 16th century, with parts of the structure possibly originating from an even earlier period. The property has passed through several prominent families over the centuries, including the Estcourt family in the 1600s.

The manor gained notoriety for its alleged paranormal activity, with numerous ghost sightings reported over the years. One of the most frequently encountered spirits is said to be that of a young woman in a green dress, often seen wandering the corridors and gardens. Witnesses have described her as appearing melancholic and lost.

Another commonly reported apparition is that of a cavalier from the English Civil War period. This ghostly figure has been spotted on horseback, riding across the grounds of the estate. Some accounts claim to have heard the sound of hoofbeats even when no visible horse is present.

The manor’s kitchen is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with staff and visitors reporting the smell of cooking and the sound of pots and pans clanging when the room is empty. Some have even claimed to see the spectral form of an old cook going about her duties.

In the 1800s, there were reports of poltergeist activity in one of the bedrooms, with objects reportedly moving on their own and unexplained knocking sounds heard throughout the night. This particular haunting was said to have lasted for several months before suddenly ceasing.

The grounds of Petty France Manor are also allegedly haunted, with reports of shadowy figures seen flitting between the trees and the sound of disembodied whispers heard near an old well on the property.
