Peak Cavern
Peak Cavern, also known as Devil’s Arse, is a natural limestone cave situated in Castleton, Derbyshire, within the Peak District National Park. It boasts the largest cave entrance in Britain, measuring 60 feet high and 100 feet wide. The cave system extends for over 650 meters into the hillside.
Inhabited since the Mesolithic period, Peak Cavern has a rich history. During the 16th century, it became home to rope makers who lived and worked inside the cave entrance. This community, known as “rope village,” continued their craft until the early 20th century.
Several ghost stories are associated with Peak Cavern. One of the most well-known is that of a young woman named Hannah Baddaley, who allegedly fell to her death while picking flowers near the cave entrance in the 18th century. Visitors have reported seeing her ghostly figure wandering near the cave mouth, often accompanied by the sound of a woman’s scream.
Another legend tells of a Roman soldier who haunts the cave system. Witnesses claim to have seen his apparition, complete with armor and weaponry, patrolling the cavern’s depths. Some speculate that he may have been part of a Roman expedition that became lost in the cave network.
The cave’s infamous “Lumbago Walk,” a narrow passage requiring visitors to bend uncomfortably, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a man who died while attempting to navigate it. People have reported feeling unexplained cold spots and a sense of being watched in this area.
Paranormal investigators have documented various phenomena within Peak Cavern, including unexplained temperature fluctuations, strange mists, and disembodied voices. Some visitors have also reported feeling sudden, intense emotions or a sense of unease in certain parts of the cave system.
