Oak House

Oak House

Oak House in Sandwell, West Midlands, is a Grade II listed building dating back to the 16th century. Originally constructed as a yeoman farmer’s house, it was later expanded and modified in the 17th century. The timber-framed structure features distinctive black and white exterior styling typical of the Tudor period.

The house has a rich history, having been owned by several prominent families over the centuries. John Turton, a wealthy nail maker, purchased the property in 1634 and made significant improvements to the building. The Turton family continued to own and occupy Oak House until the late 19th century.

Oak House has gained a reputation for paranormal activity over the years. Staff and visitors have reported numerous ghostly encounters and unexplained phenomena. One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a young woman in a white dress, believed to be the spirit of a former servant. She has been observed in various rooms of the house, particularly on the upper floors.

Another recurring paranormal experience involves the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through empty corridors and rooms. These footsteps are often accompanied by the sensation of an unseen presence nearby. Some witnesses have reported feeling suddenly cold or experiencing a sense of unease in certain areas of the building.

In the Great Hall, visitors have claimed to see the ghostly figure of a man dressed in 17th-century clothing, thought to be John Turton himself. This apparition is said to appear briefly before vanishing into thin air. Other reported phenomena include objects moving on their own, doors opening and closing without explanation, and mysterious whispers heard throughout the house.
