Nunnington Hall
Nunnington Hall, situated in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, is a picturesque 17th-century manor house with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The current structure, built in the 1680s, stands on the site of an earlier medieval hall. The property has been owned by several notable families throughout its history, including the Parr family and the Viscount Preston.
The hall is renowned for its reported paranormal activity and ghost sightings. One of the most famous ghostly residents is said to be Lady Nunnington, also known as the Grey Lady. According to legend, she haunts the hall’s Oak Staircase, where witnesses have reported seeing her apparition descending the stairs. The story goes that she was locked in a small room by her jealous husband and eventually starved to death.
Another frequently reported ghost is that of a young boy, believed to be the son of the 2nd Lord Preston. Visitors and staff have claimed to hear the sound of a child running through the halls and playing with toys. Some have even reported seeing the boy’s apparition in various rooms of the house.
The Haunted Bedroom is another area of paranormal interest within Nunnington Hall. Guests have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere, experiencing sudden temperature drops, and hearing unexplained noises in this room. Some have even claimed to feel an unseen presence sitting on the bed.
Other reported phenomena include the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through the corridors, doors opening and closing on their own, and the smell of lavender perfume wafting through certain areas of the house. Staff members have also reported objects moving inexplicably and lights turning on and off without explanation.
