Nottingham Castle

Nottingham Castle, perched atop Castle Rock, has a rich history dating back to 1068 when William the Conqueror ordered its construction. The original wooden fortress was replaced by a stone castle in the 12th century. It played a significant role in English history, including the start of the English Civil War in 1642 when Charles I raised his standard there.

The castle has been associated with numerous ghostly encounters over the centuries. One of the most famous spectral residents is said to be the ghost of Roger Mortimer, the lover of Queen Isabella. Mortimer was captured at the castle in 1330 and later executed. Witnesses have reported seeing his apparition wandering the grounds, particularly near the site of his capture.

Another notable ghost is that of a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often seen crying near the castle’s well. Legend suggests she fell to her death while drawing water. Visitors have reported hearing her sobs and catching glimpses of her ethereal form.

The castle’s dungeons are said to be haunted by the spirits of prisoners who suffered and died there. Unexplained cold spots, disembodied voices, and the sound of chains rattling have been reported in these areas.

King David II of Scotland, who was imprisoned at Nottingham Castle for 11 years, is said to haunt the castle’s corridors. Witnesses have described seeing a regal figure in medieval attire roaming the halls.

The ghost of a Roundhead soldier from the Civil War era has been spotted on the castle grounds, often appearing near the spot where he reportedly fell in battle.
