Nothe Fort

Nothe Fort

Nothe Fort, situated on the Nothe Peninsula in Weymouth, Dorset, was constructed between 1860 and 1872 to protect Portland Harbour. The fort played a crucial role during World War II as a naval gunnery school and anti-aircraft defense site. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing its military history.

Over the years, Nothe Fort has gained a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and staff have reported numerous ghostly encounters within its walls. One of the most frequently sighted spirits is that of a Victorian-era soldier, often seen patrolling the ramparts or standing guard in the tunnels. Witnesses describe him as wearing a red coat and disappearing when approached.

Another recurring apparition is a young girl, believed to be the daughter of a former garrison commander. People have heard her laughter echoing through the corridors and caught glimpses of her playing in various areas of the fort. Some visitors have even reported feeling a small hand tugging at their clothing when no one else was present.

The underground tunnels and ammunition stores are particularly active areas for paranormal experiences. Staff members have reported hearing heavy footsteps and whispered conversations when the fort was empty. Cold spots and sudden temperature drops are common occurrences in these areas, often accompanied by an overwhelming sense of unease.

One documented incident involved a group of visitors who claimed to have seen a full-bodied apparition of a World War II soldier in the museum area. The figure reportedly walked through a wall and vanished, leaving the witnesses stunned. Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recordings have also captured unexplained voices and sounds within the fort’s walls, adding to its reputation as a haunted location.
